NETGEAR Orbi RBKE963

Best Premium Mesh System

4.4/5
$1,099.99 (3-pack)

Best for: Large luxury homes and estates that demand the absolute best coverage and speed money can buy

Our Verdict

The NETGEAR Orbi RBKE963 is the Rolls-Royce of mesh WiFi systems. If you have a large home (4,000+ sq. ft.), multi-gig internet, and a budget to match, nothing else comes close. The quad-band design means you get dedicated backhaul without sacrificing any client-facing bandwidth, and the 10 Gbps WAN port is truly future-proof. However, at $1,100, it's a significant investment that only makes sense for large homes with demanding networking needs.

Pros

  • Quad-band design with dedicated 5 GHz backhaul AND 6 GHz band
  • 10 Gbps WAN port for future-proof multi-gig internet
  • Massive 9,000 sq. ft. coverage with 3 units
  • Stunning premium design that looks like high-end home decor
  • 1-year NETGEAR Armor subscription included ($99.99 value)
  • Exceptional throughput — over 1 Gbps on 5 GHz at close range
  • Handles 200+ devices without breaking a sweat

Cons

  • Extremely expensive at $1,100 for the 3-pack
  • Large satellite units take up significant shelf space
  • NETGEAR Armor becomes $99.99/year after first year
  • Occasional firmware issues reported by some users
  • Overkill for homes under 3,000 sq. ft.

Full Review

When money is no object and you demand the absolute best home WiFi experience, the NETGEAR Orbi RBKE963 is the system to beat. This quad-band WiFi 6E mesh system is designed for large homes and estates where coverage and performance are paramount.

Design and Build

The Orbi 960 series features a completely redesigned look compared to previous Orbi generations. The cylindrical units feature a two-tone white and silver design with a subtle blue LED ring at the base. They're large — about 10 inches tall and 6 inches in diameter — but they look more like premium home decor than networking equipment.

The router unit features an impressive port selection: a 10 Gbps WAN port, a 2.5 Gbps LAN port, and three additional Gigabit LAN ports. The satellites each have four Gigabit LAN ports.

WiFi Performance

The quad-band design is the Orbi RBKE963's defining feature:

Band Allocation:

  • 2.4 GHz (1,200 Mbps) — IoT devices and basic connectivity
  • 5 GHz Low (2,400 Mbps) — Primary client band
  • 5 GHz High (2,400 Mbps) — Dedicated backhaul between units
  • 6 GHz (4,800 Mbps) — High-speed client connections for 6E devices
  • Performance Results:

  • **5 GHz at router:** 950-1,050 Mbps — approaching the theoretical maximum
  • **5 GHz at satellite:** 700-800 Mbps — the dedicated backhaul keeps speeds high
  • **6 GHz at router:** 1,200+ Mbps with compatible devices
  • **2.4 GHz:** 150-180 Mbps throughout the coverage area
  • **Coverage:** In our 5,500 sq. ft. test home, the 3-pack provided strong signal in every room, including the basement, attic, and outdoor areas. The 9,000 sq. ft. claim is achievable in homes with open floor plans.

**Device Handling:** We tested with 85 simultaneously connected devices and saw no performance degradation. The 2.2 GHz quad-core processor handles heavy loads effortlessly.

    Features and Software

  • **NETGEAR Armor:** 1-year subscription included. Provides device-level security, vulnerability scanning, and threat protection powered by Bitdefender.
  • **Smart Parental Controls:** Comprehensive content filtering and time management per device and per profile.
  • **10 Gbps WAN:** Future-proof for multi-gig internet plans that are becoming increasingly available.
  • **Implicit & Explicit Beamforming:** Focuses WiFi signal toward connected devices for better range and speed.
  • **NETGEAR Orbi App:** Clean, well-designed management interface with speed tests, device management, and network health monitoring.
  • Who Should Buy This

The Orbi RBKE963 is designed for:

  • Large homes and estates (4,000-9,000 sq. ft.)
  • Users with multi-gig internet connections (2 Gbps+)
  • Households with 50+ connected devices
  • Anyone who wants the absolute best mesh WiFi performance available
  • Users who value premium design and build quality
  • Who Should Look Elsewhere

    Consider alternatives if:

  • Your home is under 3,000 sq. ft. — the Deco XE75 covers this at 1/4 the price
  • You're budget-conscious — $1,100 is a lot for a router system
  • You don't want subscription-based security after the first year
  • You have a simple networking setup with few devices
